Al contrario que otros pintores de la época Vermeer, Velázquez, Rembrandt y Poussin, Rubens jamás se pintó a sí mismo como pintor, ni en el estudio ni con las herramientas de trabajo. Jamás representó su casa o el taller (ni siquiera en forma alegórica) como lugar de trabajo. Debido en parte a la gran eficacia de un taller, parece que Rubens imaginó su lugar de creación en otra parte, en un lugar más extraño, más salvaje y menos social: en el cuerpo y, por extensión, en un lugar ajeno a la mente. Si existe alguna figura a la que Rubens concedió un peso particular y en la que se reconoció parcialmente, es el orondo Sileno borracho. Ciertamente, Sileno no es una mujer y en ningún caso parece estar en condiciones de hacer la guerra o el amor (por citar las dos actividades renacentistas que se asignaban a los hombres). Pero Sileno tiene el poder de crear, en el sentido de que, cuando está borracho y semi-inconsciente, se abandona a su propio canto.
