The General Theory of Urbanization is the name Spanish civil engineer, Ildefonso Cerda, gave to his life work after he invented the term 'urbanization' in 1860-61. His theory was the first in modern times to focus methodically on the city as a construction, its evolution and the workings and interaction of its constituent parts. Until now Cerda, who was marginalized by certain elements of Barcelona establishment, has been relatively unknown on the world stage, but at no time has anyone anywhere treated the subject of the urb from so many viewpoints. In fact, no one has even tried.
