Synopsis

The General Theory of Urbanization is the name Spanish civil engineer, Ildefonso Cerda, gave to his life work after he invented the term 'urbanization' in 1860-61. His theory was the first in modern times to focus methodically on the city as a construction, its evolution and the workings and interaction of its constituent parts. Until now Cerda, who was marginalized by certain elements of Barcelona establishment, has been relatively unknown on the world stage, but at no time has anyone anywhere treated the subject of the urb from so many viewpoints. In fact, no one has even tried.

This book is a full and comprehensive study of Cerda's work and examines his holistic treatment of complexity, his search for consistent and explicit objectives, his struggle to make contradictory requirements mutually compatible, his respect for the dignity and freedom of all, and his flexibility when faced with change.

Cerda - The Five Bases Of The General Theory Of Urbanization is split into five sections: the Technical, Administrative, Political, Legal, and the Economic Base of Urbanization. This is the first time Cerda's work has been published in English.
