This is a standout volume in a field already well supplied with beginning watercolor books. The editors have put together 20 visually stunning chapters. Even seemingly dry advice on the selection of brushes and paper is embellished with pertinent color examples to motivate the beginner. In 17 step-by-step exercises, novice painters are walked through the fundamentals, from dragging with a dry brush, to using salt, to creating light and texture. Tantalizing examples, such as Andrew Wyeth!s The Rope, are particularly well chosen. Highly recommended for all collections, followed perhaps by Hazel Harrison!s more advanced Master Strokes: Watercolor: A Step-by-Step Guide to Using the Techniques of the Masters (LJ 7/99).
