Sharon Guskin se graduó en Yale University y en la Columbia University School of Arts. Además de esta novela ha escrito guiones y ha producido documentales. Comenzó a investigar sobre las ideas que ha vertido en este libro a partir de su experiencia trabajando en un campo de refugiados en Tailandia y, posteriormente, como voluntaria en un orfanato tras el nacimiento de su primer hijo. Vive en Brooklyn con su familia.
