Saint Louis, con novecientos judíos que lograron huir de Alemania, estuvo fondeado varios días frente al puerto de La Habana a la espera del permiso para los refugiados. El niño Daniel Kaminsky y su tío esperaron en el muelle a que desembarcaran sus familiares, confiados en que usaran ante los funcionarios el tesoro que portaban a escondidas: un pequeño lienzo de Rembrandt que perteneció a los Kaminsky desde el siglo XVII. Pero el plan fracasó y el barco regresó a Alemania, llevándose con él toda esperanza de reencuentro. Muchos años después, en 2007, la noticia de que ese lienzo se subasta en Londres, provoca que el hijo de Daniel, Elías, decida viajar a La Habana desde Estados Unidos para aclarar qué sucedió realmente con el cuadro y su familia. Sólo alguien como el Conde puede ayudarle en la misión. Y en los encuentros y las conversaciones sabremos que Daniel decidió cambiar radicalmente de vida y que le atormentaba un crimen.
