The reign of James II of Aragon coincided with an exciting time of tremendous upheaval on the Iberian Peninsula and elsewhere in the medieval world. As king of Aragon, Valencia, Murcia, and Cerde�a, and as count of Barcelona, James oversaw a number of military victories and a few defeats in Sicily, northern Africa, the Byzantine Empire, and other places. All the while, he struggled against a French monarchy and papacy unwilling to relinquish any control over the Mediterranean region or the Italian peninsula. Ultimately, though, James II’s reign would be best known as the golden age of the Crown of Aragon.
