Recuerdos de niñez y de mocedad apareció en 1908, pero está formada por textos compuestos mucho tiempo antes y publicados como artículos sueltos en El Nervión de Bilbao, entre 1891 y 1892. La idea de recopilar estos escritos nació poco después, ya que en una carta fechada en 1898 Unamuno habla de su proyecto de editar un libro titulado Recuerdos de niñez y juventud. El autor rememora en estos Recuerdos de niñez y mocedad los primeros años de su vida, los transcurridos en Bilbao hasta su partida a Madrid para estudiar en la Universidad. Aparte del interés que reviste por su carácter autobiográfico y de la amenidad de los episodios que en ella se narran, la obra constituye un eslabón inevitable en la trayectoria del autor que, sin duda, en su constante pugna contra la muerte, no podía dejar que toda esa parcela de su existencia quedara sepultada en la oscuridad y el silencio del olvido.
