Synopsis

Presenting three parallel biographies, this novel follows the lives of Paul and Theodor Bernheim, two brothers in post-World War I Germany determined to stave off economic ruin by whatever means necessary, and Nikolai Brandeis, the enigmatic and intelligent figure who is guiding their fates. This chilling story is a lucid and insightful portrait of power and those who hold it, of money and its buying and selling mechanisms, and of the rapid descent of a city—Berlin—and a country between wars.
