Lepman huyó de Alemania con sus hijos y comenzó una nueva vida en Inglaterra. Al término de la contienda, fue enviada como asesora a las ruinas de Alemania para trabajar en la reeducación de las mujeres y los niños. El libro comienza con el regreso de Jella Lepman a Alemania en el otoño de 1945, tras su exilio en Reino Unido, y termina con su retiro de la Biblioteca en 1957. En estos años, en una Alemania de posguerra aún sumida en los escombros, Jella Lepman promueve la primera exposición internacional de libros infantiles (1949), inaugura la Biblioteca Internacional de la Juventud e impulsa la creación de IBBY (1953) y del premio Hans Christian Andersen.
