Large 200 page folio book. Bilingual Spanish and English. Illustrated in color. The great value of this publication lies fundamentally in its content. Few Spanish and Australian citizens know the shared past of two countries that, as common belief, are situated in antipodes and not only geographically speaking. This book illustrates and tells the story of the Spanish discovery of Australia, by Luis Vaez de Torres. Commanding 300 sailors and soldiers, Pedro Fernandez de Quiros and Luis Vaez de Torres soldiers left the Peruvian port of Callao on December 21, 1605, with the intention of finding the great piece of land that stretches from the straight of Magellan as far as New Guinea and greater Java, that is to say, the large Southern continent that was thought to exist in the minds of geographers at the end of the 16th century. After sailing with three ships for five months, Quiros and Torres arrived in Espiritu Santo the new Hebrides Island group (Vanuatu), which Quiros named, Australia del Espiritu Santo. A storm separated the ships of Quiros and Torres. Quiros returned to Mexico, but Torres, after a further search lasting two weeks then set his course for the Philippines. He passed through the strait that separates New Guinea from Australia, which today bears his name, and sighted the tip of what is now the Peninsula of York. At last, accidentally, he had discovered Australia. The captain who was accompanying him, Diego de Prado y Tovar, made the maps and drawings that document these discoveries and which appear in this book. In 1613 from Goa he sent these to Philip III, the king of Spain. Today they are held in the Archivo General de Simanca in Spain . The map on the cover of this book carries the signature of Prado E Tovar. on the cover of this book, which carries the signature of Prado y Tovar.
