One of the first great undertakings that introduced Eastern philosophy to the Western world, this collection of Heinrich Zimmer’s work compiled posthumously by his protégé Joseph Campbell explores the symbols and myths of Indian wisdom. The immense range of Eastern beliefs is separated into two types of philosophies, the first of which applies to daily life and the second of which describes a way of living in relation to the afterlife. Philosophies rooted in our time success, obligation, and pleasure deal with the way people should behave toward nature and others, while the eternal philosophies discussed include Jainism, Tantra, Samkhya and yoga, Brahmanism, and Buddhism. Groundbreaking and important, this book is a monumental testimony to Zimmer’s lifelong work of chronicling the intricacies of Eastern thought.

This volume . . . represents [Zimmer’s] major contribution to our understanding of Asia. It is both the most complete and most intelligent account of this extraordinarily rich and complex philosophical tradition yet written.” New York Times Book Review, on the English-language edition
