In 1762, the Tsar Peter III of Russia dies in a coup d’etat and Catherine, his wife of age 33, assumes power and becomes Catherine of Russia. Although the coup was organized by the Imperial Guard and members of the nobility, Catherine supported the political plan and accepted the conditions of the conspirators. However, from the very beginning she manifested the policies that would govern during her reign: a strengthening of the state internally, unlimited power to the nobility, and an aggressive exterior policy in order to achieve Russian hegemony in Eastern Europe and to situate the country as a world power internationally – in sum, a return to the times of Peter the Great, grandfather of the Catherine’s fallen husband.
