A Brief History of Habsburg Spain explains the history of the Habsburg Dynasty by focusing on the monarchies of Charles V, Philip II, Philip III, Philip IV, and Charles II. But beyond merely explaining each king’s rule, this work attempts to examine the historical contexts in which each leader governed. For example, the author takes a closer look at the Protestant Reform of Charles V, the expulsion of the Moriscos from Spain under Philip III, and the Thirty Years War during the period of Philip IV. Finally, this book looks at the impact that the Habsburg Spain period had in the Americas, from the initial stages of the Conquest to the ways in which New World territories were organized.

About the Author:

David Alonso GarcIa has a degree in history and a PhD in geography and history from the University Complutense of Madrid, where received the Extraordinary Doctorate Award and where he currently works as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Modern History. Additionally he has done research work at the London School of Economics and Political Sciences, la UniversitA di Roma "La Sapienza", and The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). In 2003 he received the Villa de Madrid prize for municipal research for his work, Gabellae Concertatae: Madrid y la hacienda real de Castilla en tiempos de Carlos V. Currently he is involved in different research projects dealing with the Habsburg Spain historical period and that are financed by the European Science Foundation and the Community of Madrid.
