José Zorrilla y Moral nació en Valladolid el 21 de febrero de 1817 y murió en Madrid en 1893. Estudia en Madrid con los jesuitas donde toma afición a escribir versos. Es enviado a Toledo y Valladolid a estudiar leyes en aquellas universidades pero ya no fue posible apartarlo de sus tendencias bohemias y tras pintorescas peripecias le bastó leer unos versos en el entierro de Larra para alcanzar celebridad.· Meses después publica sus primeras composiciones poéticas a las que seguirán sus obras dramáticas y leyendas, en las que palpita su alma cristiana, romántica y caballeresca. Aunque sus éxitos se suceden sin interrupción, su vida estuvo acosada por necesidades económicas. Recorrió varios países de Europa y América, residiendo dos veces en México, donde fue recibido con grandes honores. Lector y consejero del emperador Maximiliano, al saber de su muerte, ya no quiso regresar a aquel país.Ingresa en la Real Academia de la Lengua donde es coronado con laureles de oro en Granada. Viejo y glorioso vivió sus últimos años con una pensión asignada por las Cortes.Según el maestro Azorín, Don Juan Tenorio "es la obra más excelsa del teatro español", que hizo popular al héroe del amor y la aventura.
