A consecuencia de un turbio incidente con el hijo de un poderoso político, Rocco Schiavone, subjefe de la policía de Roma, ha sido «desterrado» a una pequeña ciudad del valle de Aosta, en los Alpes italianos. Para un romano sofisticado y amante de la buena vida, no es la mejor noticia. El frío, las botas de nieve y el provincianismo de los autóctonos estimulan la natural tendencia de Rocco a las malas pulgas, así que, visto el panorama, un caso difícil le vendría de maravilla. La ocasión se presenta cuando aparece un cadáver aplastado bajo las huellas de una máquina pisanieves en una de las estaciones de esquí de la zona. El desafío es importante. A la escasez del material encontrado hay que añadir la ignorancia de Schiavone de las costumbres locales, su desconocimiento del dialecto y la historia del lugar. Nada que amilane, desde luego, a una persona decidida y orgullosa como él. Sin renunciar un ápice a su temperamento meridional, Rocco se abre camino entre pistas, refugios de montaña y teleféricos, interroga a monitores, guías y enigmáticos operarios del valle, y, sobre todo, traba relación con unas cuantas lugareñas guapas dispuestas a ofrecerle una cálida bienvenida.
