Quando Ugo Foscolo è a Bologna, nel 1798, compie la prima parziale stesura del romanzo Ultime lettere di Jacopo Ortis, che viene poi pubblicato in quello stesso anno. L'opera, profondamente riveduta, viene ripubblicata a Milano nel 1802 ispiratore di questa seconda redazione è l'amore del poeta per Isabella Roncioni, conosciuta in Toscana. Ma le Lettere hanno un destino movimentato perché subiranno ulteriori aggiunte e correzioni a Zurigo (1816) e a Londra (1817). Il travaglio "compositivo" dell'opera rispecchia la crisi, non solo politica, ma soprattutto filosofica ed esistenziale dell'autore, scaturita dal contrasto tra leggi meccanicistiche della natura e ansia di vita, tra razionalismo e nuove aspirazioni romantiche.
