Synopsis
The story of a seminal experience on the international art scene in the 1960s. In the postwar period characterized by wide-ranging experimentation involving major artists and international exchanges, Azimut/h played a key cultural and expressive role. Founded in 1959 with slightly different names by Piero Manzoni and Enrico Castellani, the gallery (Azimut) and the magazine (Azimuth) forged a new concept of aesthetics. In doing so, they were inspired by intense relationships developed with some of the leading figures exploring the language and theory of Italian and international art at the time. This book focuses on the Italian artists of that generation and the European and American reach of their work.

About the Author
Luca Massimo Barbero is a modern and contemporary art historian. He was director of the MACRO, Rome, from 2009 to 2011. Since 2002, he has been an associate curator at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice. He is currently director of the Institute of Art History at the Fondazione Cini, Venice, and artistic director of the Galleria d’arte contemporanea di Palazzo Forti, Verona.

Azimuth war eine 1959 von Piero Manzoni und Enrico Castellani gegründete Kunstzeitschrift, die in nur zwei Ausgaben erschien (Nr. 1 im Jahr 1959 und Nr. 2 im Januar 1960). Die Zeitschrift, deren Umschlag und grafische Gestaltung von Cecco Re stammte, war stark von theoretischen Aspekten der Kunst geprägt und veröffentlichte Texte von Intellektuellen und Kunstkritikern wie Gillo Dorfles, Guido Ballo, Vincenzo Agnetti und Bruno Alfieri, Werke von Künstlern wie Lucio Fontana, Agostino Bonalumi, Yves Klein, Jean Tinguely, Jasper Johns und Robert Rauschenberg sowie Gedichte von Edoardo Sanguineti, Nanni Balestrini, Elio Pagliarani, Leo Paolazzi und anderen. Im selben Jahr erschien Heft 2 der Zeitschrift, in dem die Texte Continuità e nuovo von Enrico Castellani, Libera dimensione von Piero Manzoni, Una nuova concezione di pittura von Udo Kultermann und L'oscurità e la luce von Otto Piene in italienischer, englischer und französischer Sprache veröffentlicht wurden [Wikipedia].
