Traces Paolo Canevari's life chronologically, and illustrates works from different moments in his life Accompanies an exhibition at the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, Rome, 21 March to 1 August 2010 This monograph accompanies the exhibition Paolo Canevari - Nobody Knows, curated by Germano Celant. Included are some of Canevari's foremost artworks supported by various media, from videos to the sculptures created with rubber from inner tubes and tires, and a figure reminiscent of the Little Prince balancing on top of one of his many works entitled Globe, which was created during the opening ceremony. Insightful text, written by the curator and comments by the artist, describes the influences, the input and the motivations behind Canevari's artistic output. Canevari was brought up in a family where his grandfather was a mosaic artist, and his father and uncle were both sculptors. He is interested in the icons which, from the post-war period to the present day, have formed the memory of Italian culture. However, he subjects them to an anti-nostalgic treatment, in which the material used to depict them recalls the crisis and decadence of a civilization. Canevari's works are on display and feature in the collections of some of the world's leading events and museums: the Venice Biennale, MoMA (Museum of Modern Art, New York) and the P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center in New York, the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin, Villa Medici in Rome, the Contemporary Art Museum of Johannesburg, and many more.
