Synopsis
Il Silmarillion, iniziato nel 1917 e rimasto incompiuto, rappresenta il tronco da cui si sono diramate tutte le opere successive di Tolkien. Vi si narrano gli eventi della Prima Eraa, alla quale di continuo si rifanno, come a un necessario antecedente e a una chiave interpretativa, i personaggi e le avventure del Signore degli Anelli.
I tre Silmaril, nucleo simbolico della narrazione, la cui perdita e tentata riconquista costituiscono lo schema della vicenda, sono gemme tenute in altissimo conto dagli Elfi, ma concupite anche da Melkor-Morgoth, primo Signore Oscuro, perché contengono la Luce dei Due Alberi di Valinor distrutti dall'avversario.
Vera e propria mitologia, il Silmarillion, che comprende cinque racconti legati come i capitoli di un'unica "storia sacra" narra la parabola di una caduta: dalla "musica degl'inizi", il momento cosmogonico, alla guerra, eroica quanto disperata, di Elfi e Uomini contro il nemico. Un'opera unica nel suo genere, forse l'unico tentativo compiuto in tempi recenti di costruire un vero e proprio edificio mitico, nel linguaggio, sublime e semplice insieme, che è proprio dell'antico epos.
