Engineer Roberto Mazzara specializes in the use of robots and other cutting-edge technology for underwater salvaging. He is best known for having found the diving bell of the Santa Maria, the flagship of Christopher Columbus’ fleet, which he discovered in 1994 off the northern coast of Portugal. Consuelo Varela is a researcher at the School of Hispanic American Studies in Seville. Her work examines the early years of exploration with a particular focus on Columbus and Vespucci.
