Nero e rosso sono i due colori dominanti dell'Inferno. La cantica si apre con una tavola introduttiva raffigurante il poeta di fronte alla visione della sfera infernale; Dante è raffigurato aderente all'iconografia tradizionale, con il lauro che gli cinge il capo, il consueto abito rosso e il caratteristico profilo, mentre contempla, quasi da spettatore, l'immensità del suo viaggio e del suo progetto poetico. Le straordinarie illustrazioni che accompagnano il percorso attraverso l'Inferno sono ricche di soluzioni compositive e spaziali nelle quali l'artista privilegia il senso della verticalità esplicitato attraverso un movimento accelerato verso gli abissi e le profondità della terra. Il sapiente, virtuosistico uso delle matite, della grafite, del carboncino, i rari accenti rosso sangue, sono all'origine di una lingua segnica incisiva, lacerata, nervosa. L'altissima qualità del disegno con cui Bonanotte raggiunge i neri più cupi e profondi e le trasparenze accecanti di una luce senza giorno è associata a una potente visione dello spazio, lacerata da linee di forza, fasci di luce, segni come tagli, che scompaginano l'insieme e lo ricompongono secondo un nuovo ordine.
