Born at the end of the seventeenth century and died just beyond the mid-eighteenth century in Florence, Giovanni Domenico Ferretti (or Giandomenico) was one of the most important painters, both in fresco and on canvas, of the Tuscan Rococo. His father, Antonio, originally from Imola, was a goldsmith, and his mother, Margherita Gori, came from a prominent family in Florence, whose most famous representative was Anton Francesco Gori, a renowned scholar in Europe, known for his in-depth studies on Etruscan civilization and a cousin of the painter. Second only to his contemporary Giovanni Camillo Sagrestani, Ferretti had the good fortune to encounter a master of great caliber on his path, the Bolognese Giuseppe Maria Crespi, who brought to the Tuscan classicist school the great tradition of Emilian-Paduan art, merging with Ferretti to embark on a pictorial career of great originality. This was also supported by other artists with whom he worked, both in Florence, with Tommaso Redi and Sebastiano Galeotti, and in Bologna, in the workshop of Felice Torelli and his wife Lucia Casalini, both painters. This book dedicated to Giovanni Domenico Ferretti, is the third written by Francesca Baldassari, following those on Carlo Dolci (1995) and Cristoforo Munari (1998), the latter being the protagonist of a monographic exhibition curated by her in Reggio Emilia (1999). A specialist and internationally renowned expert in Tuscan painting and still life of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the scholar has numerous essays, articles, and catalog entries for exhibitions to her credit. Nato al tramonto del Seicento e morto poco oltre la metà del Settecento a Firenze, Giovanni Domenico Ferretti (o Giandomenico) fu uno dei più importanti pittori, sia d'affresco che su tela, del rococò toscano, suo padre Antonio, originario di Imola era orafo e la madre Margherita Gori proveniva da una famiglia molto in vista a Firenze, il cui rappresentante più famoso era Anton Francesco Gori, erudito di fama europea, anche per i suoi studi approfonditi sulla civiltà etrusca e cugino del pittore.
