By the end of the 13th century tapestries had begun to replace silk hangings as forms of wall decoration in French chateaux, large domestic and ecclesiastical houses. Many of the tapestries were hung on the north and south walls of the choir stalls in cathedrals, colleges, abbeys and churches, often depicting the lives of saints and miracles associated with their life and those occuring after their death. Published to accompany an exhibition held in Toulous, Aix-en-Provence and Caen in 2004-5, this book studies the history and tradition of tapestry production, examines where they were hung, the subjects they depicted and their liturgical role. One of the three introductory essays also looks at aspects of costume represented in the tapestries. The main part of the book presents a catalouge of examples from Angers, Beauvais, Bayeux, Beaune, Le Mans, Aix-en-Provence, La Chaise-Dieu, Le Ronceray, Saint-Hilaire-Saint-Florent, Tours, Montpezat-de-Quercy, Reims and Chartres, accompanied by discussion of their size, provenance, patron or donor, date and subject matter.
