For his recent show at the Fondazione Merz, German conceptual artist Wolfgang Laib (born 1950) fashioned an installation of hundreds of small rice mountains, a line of small mountains of pollen and a great mountain of beeswax. Laib elucidates the symbolism thus: "The pollen recalls the beginning and creation; the rice mountains and the beeswax Ziggurat and the bond of the sky with the earth."

Wolfgang Laib, artista tedesco si è formato sotto l'influenza del pittore di paesaggi jakob Brackle. Si interessa alla cultura e alla filosofia dell'estremo oriente. Vicino ai movimenti artistici della Land art e della Minimal art, utilizza nelle sue opere materiali naturali, come la cera d'api, il polline, il riso. Le sue opere più note sono le Milchsteine (pietre di latte): grandi blocchi concavi di marmo bianco riempiti di latte. Una prima retrospettiva della sua opera ha girato, tra il 2000 e il 2002, negli USA, facendo tappa, tra gli altri, al Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden al Washington Museum, e, più tardi, in Europa, alla haus der Kunst di Monaco di BavieraPer Laib l'arte è un atto di partecipazione e condivisione, partecipare alla natura e condividere con altri l'esperienza. Le radici del suo pensiero affondano nell'idea di equilibrio e di armonia che regolano il mondo e l'opera dell'uomo, fondamentale custode dell'universo. Questa dimensione spirituale è alla base della grande mostra torinese che si è svolta in due momenti: con l'installazione di centinaia di piccole montagne di riso, una linea di piccole montagne di polline e una grande montagna Ziggurat di cera d'api che ha riempito tutto lo spazio della Fondazione. Poi con un evento che soltanto per la seconda volta è stato celebrato in pubblico fuori dall'India: il mahayagna, il rito vedico del fuoco, officiato per sette giorni da quarantacinque Bramini provenienti da alcuni dei templi più importanti dell'India del Sud.
