The first Tirana Biennale--and its vivid, eclectic, smartly-designed catalogue--is a riotous, excellent sign of the coming of a new era for Albania's artistic community. Despite scepticism, more than 300 international artists participated in the event, including Vanessa Beecroft, Olaf Breuning, Maurizio Cattelan, Rineke Dijkstra, Micha Klein, Shirin Neshat, Rob Pruitt, and Gregor Schneider.
Edited by Giancarlo Politi. Introduction by Edi Rama & Gezim Qendro. Essays by Ahu Antmen, Francesco Bonami, Chaos Y. Chen, Jim Cook, Jiri David, Patricia Ellis, Marina Fokidis, Massimiliano Gioni, Jens Hoffmann, Helena Kontova, Jan-Erik Lundstrom, Edi Muka, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Gea Politi, Paul Quinones, Michele Robecchi, Andreas Schlaegel, Wolf Gunter Thiel and Oliviero Toscani.
