A little further up we find a labyrinth of high hedges of boxwood. These hedges are characteristic of the so-called "Italian" garden style, which as its name implies started in Italy and more precisely in the 16th century when, with the beautiful Renaissance villas, garden architecture was also born, in accordance with the ideal of harmony between palace and landscape. The plants were no longer allowed to grow as nature intended but pruned to follow precise geometric forms. This type of garden consists solely of green plants: trees, bushes, hedges, and the art lies in harmonizing their different tones and shades of green. Tall pines and cypresses, cedars and chestnuts alternate with magnolias, jew and mimosa. The paths are framed by evergreen ilexes and almost every species of palm grows there: from the tall date-palm to the pointed Cycas, to the low Chamaerops humilis, which are called here St. Peter's palms. These are trees typical of a Mediterranean environment but we also find clumps of African bananas, Japanese ginkgo trees and Australian monkey-puzzles which throw their amusing bushy crowns up to the sky.
