Nell'ottobre del 1754, Robert Adam lascia Edimburgo per intraprendere il viaggio che lo porterà prima in Italia e successivamente a Spalato, in Dalmazia. La riedizione di questo libro, non più edito dal 1764, riporta la trascrizione di quel viaggio, ampliandolo con un'ampia iconografia sulle rappresentazioni del Palazzo di Diocleziano da Adam ai contemporanei, un saggio introduttivo di Howard Burns e un testo del curatore Marco Navarra, che individua nello scritto di Adam un'attenzione al progetto contemporaneo oltre che al rilievo archeologico del monumento.
