Synopsis

The blue seas around the Jeju Island, snow-covered pine trees on the Daegwallyeong Pass, the pavilions and gardens in ancient palaces in the heart of Seoul, crafts such as the blue and white porcelains, and mother-of-pearl portable dinning tables─all of these were born of the natural beauty of Korea. They all share the common characteristics of simple, supple lines and colors, free and unbound spirit, plain and simple dispositions of Koreans, as has been explored and defined by many scholars. It is of course the result of the beauty of Korea having been rooted in our culture of nature-friendly living. This culture of nature-friendly living in turn reflects the life, hopes, and soul of Koreans. Bae Bien-u is one of the representative photographers in Korea, who has the knack for digging up the beauty in landscape. This book of photos is the fruit of his more than two years (2003-2005) of canvassing the whole country in search of truly unique beauty of Korea. The 65 photos in this book were captured through the photographer's characteristic sense of beauty of his eye and thought. These photos allow viewers to discover the lines, shapes, and colors of the pure nature, beyond the beauty on the surface. Some landscape shots are framed wide horizontally or long vertically─all somewhat heavy and down in tone. These photos do not allow the viewers to stay as spectators. Instead, they pull them into the landscape and surround them comfortably, as traditional Korean landscape paintings often do. This book of photos is powerful. It makes those who want to know what the beauty of Korea is to first feel through their hearts the exquisite order and harmony, and then to carry the deep echo with them for a long time. Bae Bien-u (1950- ) is well known throughout the world for his unique portrayal of Korean images such as those of pine trees and the Jongmyo Royal Shrine. At the invitation of Bielefeld College, Germany, he studied photo design for a year at the College.
