(From back of dust jacket) What this book contains and why it is Part 1:Some 2,300 Characters and their 214 component radicals The radicals are alphabetized by English, Korean and number of strokes. The characters are alphabetized by English, Korean, Pinyin, Chinese Characters (Hanja) Dictionary Location and "First Visible Radical" (top/left). This differs from a a conventional Hanja dictionary, which, for example lists ("name") only under the "mouth" radical. In this book, the "First Visible Radical" list locates it under the top radical ("dusk") which makes it easy to find. Of the book's other four lists, the korean list places it under (symbols), the English list under "name,", the Pinyin list under "ming," and the Hanja list under radical number 30, for "mouth." A single line contains the Korean character, the corresponding Chinese character, the Pinyin, a description of the Chinese character by its radicals, a refernce to an etymological note in the back, an English translation of the character and the international number of the radical. The notes (denoted by an "N") explain all 1800 standard Chinese characters used in korean and some 500 mor4e. Authorities are cited by page number. Part Word list of Over 10,000 Separate Korean Words As in conventional dictionaries, the lists are alphabetized by Korean and English. This book is different because it has, on a single line, not only the translation of the Korean word in Chinese characters and in English but also an English translation of the Chinese characters. In a conventional English/Korean dictionary, there is only English and Korean. One has to consult a second Korean/English dictionary for th eChinese characters and a third Hana dictionary for the English translation of the characters. This book condenses three tasks into a single step.

Hard bound. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. First, revised, edition. A unique tool for the task of learning to read Chinese, the author takes an etymological approach to each of the 2,300 characters addressed in this volume. Each character is broken down into its component radical(s) (there are 214 such radicals identified in modern written Chinese), after which the author employs the 'root' meanings of these radicals both to explain the creation of the character and as an effective path to memorization. The result is a particularly effective method for the non-native speaker to learn to read Chinese, but may also be used by those who have already learned to read, to enhance their understanding of the characters' underlying meanings. Designed both for students of Chinese characters as used in Chinese and also as used in modern written Korean. Characters are indexed alphabetically by: 'first visible radical', 'Chinese (Pinyin) reading', 'Korean reading', 'English meaning' and 'in the order in which they appear in a Chinese dictionary'. The author, a career diplomat and gifted polyglot, spent some five years on the development of the system. 1,026 pp. A new/unread copy - highly recommended.
