Synopsis

This anthology provides valuable new insights into discussions about the virtues, qualities, and position of the emperor in the Roman world (especially with regard to the perception of imperial dominion in the eastern provinces) by systematically focusing on documentary sources, i.e. inscriptions in particular. In addition, the assembled texts contribute to the study of Roman political thought, shaped by earlier traditions primarily during the Principate and the beginning of the Later Roman Empire.

About the Author

Anne Gangloff, Ph.D. (2003), Paris IV-Sorbonne University, is Senior Lecturer of Roman History at the University of Rennes. She has published monographs and many articles on imperial Hellenism and on the cultural and political history of the Roman Empire, including Pouvoir impérial et vertus philosophiques : l’évolution de la figure du bon prince sous le Haut-Empire (Brill, 2018).
Anne Gangloff, docteure (2003, Université Paris IV-Sorbonne), est maître de conférences HDR en histoire romaine à l'Université Rennes 2. Elle a publié des monographies et de nombreux articles sur l'hellénisme impérial et sur l'histoire culturelle et politique de l'Empire romain, notamment Pouvoir impérial et vertus philosophiques : l'évolution de la figure du bon prince sous le Haut-Empire (Brill, 2018).
