Dustjacket, [4],x,93 pp. With 32 reproductions & 8 folded plates. 29x22 cm. - In 1947 the learned antiquarian bookseller Ernst Philip Goldschmidt (1887-1954) was invited to America to lecture on 'The Spread of Renaissance by Means of the Book'. This work brings together the three lectures by Goldschmidt on the development of the printed book during the Renaissance. It was first printed in 1950 by Cambridge University Press in a limited edition, and reprinted with corrections in 1966. Its point of departure is the role of printing as a vehicle for the transmission of knowledge, art, and humanist ideas. Goldschmidt successively examines the development of typography, the evolution of book illustration, and the function of ornament as an integral component of book design. In doing so, he pays particular attention to the interaction between technical innovation, artistic design, and the dissemination of texts. Through numerous reproductions and folding plates, he illustrates the stylistic development of Renaissance books and the contributions of printers, typefounders, engravers, and publishers to European book culture.
