The emergence of well-organized kingdoms in Southeast Asia in the early centuries of the first millenium AD has been mainly attributed to Indian influence at a time when maritime communications between South Asia an China brought parts of Southeast Asia into direct contact with the old civilizations of Asia. The present study concentrates on local developments in several Indonesian islands, where social stratification and the rise of élites created the conditions for the emergence of early states.
The author, a distinguished anthropologist, applies her detailed knowledge of tribal societies to the analysis of the available prehistoric and protohistoric materials to establish an economic and cultural foundation for the early Indonesian states.
