Ich war nie ein großer Planer und habe aus der Intuition heraus fotografiert, immer irgendwie auf die Dinge reagierend. Ich begann damit, direkt um mich herum zu fotografieren. Und daran hat sich nie viel geändert, außer natürlich, dass meine Lebenskreise größer wurden, oder anders, oder so. Zwischen Ende 1990 und 1994 habe ich etwa sieben verschiedene Attrappen für 'Heartbeat' gemacht. Einige mit Faserabdrücken, die anderen als Fotokopien. Dies begann nach dem unerwarteten Ableben meiner Mutter. Ich hatte etwa 15 Jahre lang fotografiert und machte eine Auswahl aus dieser Zeit, natürlich über sie, aber auch über alles andere, was wichtig war: meine Beziehungen, meinen Bruder, meine Freunde, meinen Sohn und die Orte, an denen ich lebte, meist in den Niederlanden und in Frankreich.
