From School Library Journal:
Grade 1-2-- Young Pia is delighted to be spending the summer with her friend Ianni on a Greek isle, far from her native Sweden. Every day their play attracts a dolphin, which later rescues Ianni when he swims too far; the children reciprocate one hot night when they come upon it beached, and enlist the aid of the local villagers to drag it back to the water. Illustrations, done in a colorful paper-and-tissue collage technique, seem to shimmer with light, but are so stylized that Pia and her friends, despite exaggerated expressions, show little personality. The dolphin is given kind eyes, smiles and laughter, but also seems more a type than an individual. In a sidelong reference to other incidents of human/dolphin rescues, Orstadius comments, "There are many legends, but this was real life"--unfortunately, sunny locale and the international (not to say interspecies) cast don't compensate for the story's vague, lifeless prose. --John Peters, New York Public Library
