Synopsis

The author, who has written about the railways of several countries, here focuses on the locomotives of Thailand, formerly Siam. The country's early railways were of German design and remained under German management until 1917 and that influence is still visible today. The Royal State Railways began as a standard gauge line, went through a dual gauge phase and emerged as a unified metre gauge system during the late 1920s. Its steam locomotives followed these three stages with quite a number of older engines being adapted to narrow gauge after World War I. The RSR was a pioneer in diesel, acquiring its first in 1928, although full dieselisation was not achieved until 1982. The author describes all the steam and diesel locomotive types used by the RSR and the independent Maeklong railway, analyses their design and operation in relation to traffic requirements, geographical conditions and available fuel. Illustrated with rare black and white photos and the author's crisp line drawings. With rosters, bibliography and index. 88 pages.
