Increasingly, the public is becoming aware of the scale of the problem of violence at work and the different forms it takes--aggression, assault, sexual harassment, physical abuse, and homicide. The challenge of a violence-free working environment encompasses not only human rights but also labor, health and safety, and criminal justice issues. This book looks at existing legislation, guidelines, and practices and calls for a systematic approach to a problem that is now being taken up by more international agencies and that inflicts a heavy toll on so many workplaces. Duncan Chappell is deputy president of the National Federal Administrative Appeals Tribunal and former director of the Australian Institute of Criminology. Vittorio Di Martino is with the Conditions of Work and Welfare Facilities Branch of the ILO.

From the Publisher:
Violent behavior at work can take many forms such as bullying, intimidation, threats, ostracism as well as physical attacks. This book shows how this violence stems from a combination of social, economic, organizational and cultural factors that transcends boundaries of country, occupation and workplace setting. Through the analysis of current, detailed data, the study traces patterns and trends in violence at work. It cites areas and occupations most affected, looks at vulnerable situations and groups, and outlines the costs of violence to the community and the workplace as a whole. Violence at Work, 2nd edition, identifies innovative new prevention strategies as well. It focuses on policies adopted to prevent assault, harassment and abuse of employees and highlights the best practice and most successful methods. This book also looks at the existing legislation, guidelines, and practices and calls for a systematic approach to eliminating violence in the workplace.
