Drawing on a large number of studies and data from IEA Member countries, this book shows how specific indicators can be used to describe how individuals and firms use energy. Examples range from the fuel economy of automobiles (and the distances people drive them), or the energy required to make a ton of cement, to various indicators which describe the effects on national energy use of improvements in efficiency of more than two dozen energy users. The book addresses how changes in the structure of the economy are related to energy use. Ways of comparing the patterns of energy use between countries and ways of comparing changes within a country over time are discussed. Also shown are how patterns of energy use are related to carbon dioxide emissions. This work represents the first step in collaboration between the IEA and the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, the French agency ADEME, and the University of Utrecht. A subsequent book will expand greatly on the details of methodology and results.
