Urban indicators are essential to understand changing urban social, economic, and environmental conditions. Policies, economic instruments, regulations, behavior, and lifestyle to respond to these changes, citizens, firms, and governments need relevant urban indicators. This report surveys the "state of the art" of designing and using urban indicators, and calls attention to specific types that need to be developed, in particular, cross-sectoral indicators. But the challenge of finding indicators that are simple and easy to use will not be met easily. International cooperation is essential to achieve a common standardized set of indicators.
