The topic of the effects of passive smoking has become a controversial one, as smokers and non-smokers enter into disputes about their rights, each side drawing on conflicting data. The goal of this volume is to provide standardized, up-to-date methods for measuring exposure in air and biological samples, for epidemiological and regulatory purposes. Introductory chapters review the published work on monitoring, health effects and epidemiology, the nature of sidestream smoke and techniques for sampling and analysis of a variety of carcinogens and indicator substances. Nineteen detailed and tested methods are described for measuring carcinogens and indicator compounds in enclosed spaces and the body fluids of people exposed to environmental tobacco smoke. Also included is the epidemiological questionnaire developed during the IARC international study on passive smoking.
