The author has made a noble attempt to narrate the history of ancient Jaffna. Being a research into the history of Jaffna from very early times to the portuguese period 1926. The Aryan Brahmans, who emigrated into the Tamil country imitated the habits of the Tamils and elevated themselves in public estimation, and hence came to be called Andanar. Some evidence is required to support this statement. Notwithstanding these blemishes, the work deserves well of all those who may be interested in the study of the history of this ancient land of India, not merely of Jaffna, as it embodies undoubtedly a vast volume of honest and earnest work in the collection and collation and continuous presentation of a vast amount of his historical material. As the exhaustive references to Tamil literature in regard to the various points taken up for discussion. In literary efforts work is its own reward and it is more so in work of this character. The author has preserved ten illustrations from oblivion, which he considers his duty in the interest of the people of Jaffna. So, the book is good for the historian. Mudaliyar C.Rasanayagam was born on 22nd October 1870. He was educated at S Thomas College, Colombo and entered the Clerical Service in 1889. He functioned mostly as an Interpreter in the Law Courts. In 1920, he was promoted and the titular rank of "Mudaliyar" conferred on him. Later in 1923, he was promoted to the Ceylon Civil Service. He then commenced to function at the Jaffna Kachcheri till his retirement in 1929. Afterwards he devoted himself fully to research work on the History of Ancient Jaffna. It is said that at one time he employed as many as eleven scholars from India at his house to carry out studies of old manuscripts. All the ancient "ola manuscripts" collected by him were carefully deciphered and scrutinised. Rasanayagam's work, Ancient Jaffna (1926) still receives citations in the polemics penned by newspaper correspondents in Sri Lanka.
