Synopsis

Born from the lecture rooms of America's pioneering engineering colleges, Higher Mathematics: A Text-Book for Classical and Engineering Colleges opens a window into the moment when modern engineering was being forged in the classroom. This is true higher mathematics. Designed as a comprehensive college mathematics reference, Merriman and Woodward's classic unites analytic geometry and calculus with clear, orderly exposition, giving serious learners a structured path into advanced topics in mathematics that still feels disciplined, logical and surprisingly accessible. Conceived as an engineering mathematics textbook for engineering students and for ambitious scholars in the classical curriculum, it moves from fundamental concepts to the sort of engineering applied mathematics required in bridges, railways and machines. Equally suited to guided study or to a demanding self study math course, it stands as a complete classic math textbook and an unexpectedly useful advanced calculus study guide for readers who appreciate the depth and elegance of late 19th century mathematics in its original voice, serving both as a rigorous higher level math text. As an American engineering college text that shaped professional training in an era of rapid industrial change, Higher Mathematics has lasting historical and pedagogical importance for anyone interested in the evolution of mathematical teaching. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike.
