Synopsis

Turn English into Latin under the eye of a master Victorian classicist. Serious Latin work begins here. H. Nettleship's Passages for Translation into Latin Prose offers a rich sequence of English to Latin translation exercises, created to train a precise, idiomatic Latin prose style. With its thoughtful introduction on method and usage, this classical language textbook guides readers through sustained practice in classical Latin grammar practice and composition, encouraging them to think directly in Latin. Ideal for university Latin students, teachers planning Latin prose composition classes, and readers engaged in self-study Latin practice, it serves both as a working collection of exercises and as a window onto the disciplined habits of a 19th-century Latin textbook. This 19th-century Latin textbook also illuminates the ideals of Victorian classics education, revealing how generations were trained to write Latin with clarity, balance, and control. Standing alongside North and Hillard Latin Prose and Bradleys Arnold Latin Prose, Nettleship's collection remains a valuable companion for revision, enrichment, or the sheer pleasure of shaping a classical period. Out of print for decades and now republished by Alpha Editions. Restored for today's and future generations. More than a reprint - a collector's item and a cultural treasure, appealing alike to active learners, teachers of Latin translation exercises, and collectors of historic pedagogical works.
