John Clark Ridpath was born in Indiana in 1840 to parents Elijah Ridpath and Mary Ridpath. He emerged as a significant figure in American education and historical writing during the late 19th century. A passionate advocate for accessible knowledge, Ridpath dedicated much of his life to teaching and publishing. He served as a professor and later as president at Asbury College, which would later become DePauw University, and was known for his dedication to making history engaging and understandable for a general audience. One of his most renowned accomplishments was the multi-volume work Cyclopedia of Universal History, which aimed to provide a comprehensive account of world history, tracing the development of civilizations from ancient times to the modern era. He also contributed to numerous periodicals and educational publications, acting as both writer and editor. His maternal lineage traced back to Samuel Matthews, a colonial governor of Virginia, which further influenced his interest in early American history.
