About the Book Since the advent of computers, individuals and organisations increasingly process information digitally. This has led to the study of Informatics, which has become essential for every student irrespective of the field of specialisation. Informatics encompasses the study of systems and tools for the processing, transmission and access of information, which necessitate acquiring basic knowledge about computers, hardware, software, networking and networks, online access of information sources and the structure and functions of the Internet. Ravindran Asari obtained his MLISc form University of Mysore, Karnataka with first rank and he was awarded the Ranganathan Memorial Gold Medal-1974. Besides a retired University Librarian of Mahatma Gandhi University, Kerala (1990-1998) he was also the founder Head of Dept. of Library and Information Science of University. After his retirement he has been appointed by the University as the Head of Dept. of Medical Documentation, School of Medical Education (2001-2003) where he organized Dept. of Medical Documentation which is the first of its Kind in India. He was appointed several times as Special Officer for setting up libraries across Kerala and Coordinator for UGC-INFLIBNET services in Kerala. Presently he is working as Senior Guest Faculty at Dept. of Library and Information Science, University of Kerala. During his early years at Kerala Forest Research Institute, Peechi, Kerala (1975-1900) he Established the Bamboo Information Centre-India, under a Project granted by International Development Research Centre(IDRC) Canada. He also introduced computerization in the KFRI library as early in 1984, for the first time in kerala. At Mahatma Gandhi University. Online Information Retrieval was introduced in 1993
