This book would enable the students to develop interest and appreciate the role of biotechnology for future research and advancement of agriculture, veterinary, biomedical, industrial development and environmental protection for the welfare of society. The aim of this book is not only to bring together the various fields of biotechnology, but also to present the basics behind each potential biotechnology in an understandable form. The book also attempts to compile some of the biotechnology processes for their easy access at a single platform which at present, is lacking. The target of the book is to give students a complete view of know-how of biotechnology, especially those who have just ventured into this field and need a head start. Diverse biotechnologies with their basic principles along with there potential applications emerging in recent past are explained in very easy language and with the help of illustrations. Anil Kumar is presently working as Professor & Head since 2006 and was also Incharge since 2004 in the Department of Molecular Biology & Genetic Engineering and actively involved in teaching and research since last 25 years. Based on his meritorious services for the cause of teaching and research he has been given the responsibility of Coordinator, Human Resource Development in Agricultural Biotechnology, Coordinator, Sub-DIC in Bioinformatics and Co-coordinator in Programme Mode Support in Agricultural Biotechnology funded by Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India., New Delhi. He has published more than 80 research papers in reputed National and International journals, around 50 popular articles and book chapters and seven books to his credit. He was involved in teaching since last more than 20 years as demonstrator, JRO and Lecturer in Medical Institutions till 1993. Further, he joined back to his almameter in Plant Biotechnology research group at Pantnagar and was involved in signal transduction research in relation to host-pathogen interaction taking Karnal bunt-wheat and Alternaria blight-Brassica as a model system. He is engaged on three aspects of molecular plant pathology i.e. plant disease surveillance through molecular diagnostics, pathogen indexing programme through molecular pathotyping and characterization of disease resistance and pathogenesis through molecular signaling investigating the role of MAP kinases and Cystatin gene families as candidate genes. He visited the University of Jerusalem, Rehovot as FAO Fellow during 2000-2001. Anil has also visited USA under World Bank-NATP programme during 2004-05 and worked on molecular characterization and cloning of of transcription factors for investigating its role in carbon and nitrogen metabolism. Currently, he is involved in the identification of potential candidate and/or master regulator genes associated with carbon and nitrogen metabolism as well as calcium accumulation in finger millet with the intention to explore the seed biology for development of nutraceuticals. Based on his long experience, Anil is developing animal cell culture facilities for production of hybridoma and cell culture based assays which can be used for screening pharmaceutically important molecules for re-inventing the old principles of Auyrvedic biology into newer perspectives. Anil has also been awarded the Shiksha Rattan , Scientist of Excellence Award and Member of National Academy of Sciences India for his meritorious services to the cause of biotechnology education and research. Ashwani Pareek was born in New Delhi, India, in 1969. Currently, he is an Associate Professor of Life Sciences at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi. He obtained his B.Sc (Botany) and M.Sc. (Plant Molecular Biology) in 1990 and 1992, respectively, from the University of Delhi, India. He was introduced to the exciting field of Stress Physiology and Molecular Biology of plants during his Master s thesis and his Ph.D. research work under the guidance of Professor Anil Grover at the Department of Plant Molecular Biology, University of Delhi South Campus (UDSC), New Delhi. His research work during Ph.D. focused on the analysis of heat shock proteins (HSPs, especially HSP90) and salt stress proteins (SSPs) in rice. After completing his Ph.D. in 1997, he worked at the laboratory of Professor Ralph S. Quatrano, at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC, USA to learn advanced plant molecular biology , In 1998, he joined the laboratory of Professor Deepak Pental as a Research Scientist at Delhi University to work on herbicide tolerant Brassica juncea. Soon thereafter, he was appointed as a Lecturer at the newly established GGS Indraprastha University, New Delhi, India, where he played a key role in establishing the School of Biotechnology. After serving this Unive
