The previous century has seen extraordinary development in the field of physical science. The new century and the millennium, however, heralded the onset of spectacular achievements in the field of bio-science, particularly involving human beings. By acquiring the technologies of IVF-ET (test-tube babies), cloning and stem cell research, we now have the power to modify and evolve our own species. We may not have to depend anymore on the very slow natural evolution for our further development. Though the zoologists try to emphasize that Homo sapiens are nothing but a higher animal, characterization of a human being is not so simple. We, the humans, are the darling children of Mother Nature, and naturally gifted with all the power to be a winner in the vast domain of living organisms. However, we are much more complex, intricate, as well as foolhardy and vulnerable than any other animal upon this earth. To understand the implication of the new era, we must understand ourselves better. My book is such an effort in which we try to understand a human being from the very beginning of his life, that is, from the point he or she is created by fertilization of an egg by a sperm, the big bang of human existence. Part One of the book, thus, narrates the story of a fetus developing in the paradise of a maternal womb. A human being is especially vulnerable at this stage. I have discussed several mysteries associated with the unique condition of a pregnancy. It is a part of our lives we all forget, and yet, it leaves permanent imprints in our subconscious. Part Two of the book takes up different aspect of our daily lives, including the challenges, stresses, violence, criminality, love, sex, death and nirvana, the final enlightenment. This part is the most elaborate among the all the three, as I felt this may excite a common reader the most. As a doctor, I have witnessed birth as well as death from very close quarters, and often, I have narrated my first hand experiences. Along with these, I have cited numerous known as well as unknown incidents across the globe to highlight the unique and varied characters of a human being. Though the book is based on established scientific knowledge, it has occasionally entered into the domain of intuitive speculation to make it more interesting. Some areas also have philosophical insinuations as science and philosophy often merge at the highest level. I always believed in a certain degree of liberty while writing a book to prevent it becoming a pure scientific article. Part Three deals with the extraordinary technological development in the field of bio-science and the ethical and moral dilemmas associated with it. It deals with the future of our species as is projected by the scientists. It almost reads like sci-fi, though many of these facts are not at all new to the medical fraternity. The author has paid close attention to be lucid and interesting, always trying to cater to the common reader. The chapters are subdivided to try to prevent this work of non-fiction becoming monotonous.
