A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett is a beloved work of classic children’s literature that celebrates imagination, kindness, resilience, and inner strength. The story follows Sara Crewe, a bright and compassionate young girl whose privileged life at a London boarding school changes dramatically after tragedy leaves her without wealth or security.
Forced to endure hardship and a loss of status, Sara refuses to surrender her dignity or sense of self-worth. Through courage, compassion, hope, and imagination, she finds ways to remain kind even when life becomes difficult, showing that true nobility comes from character rather than riches or social position.
Rich in friendship, emotional resilience, self-belief, and personal growth, A Little Princess explores the contrast between privilege and poverty while highlighting the importance of empathy and generosity. Sara’s imagination becomes a powerful source of comfort and strength, helping her face adversity with grace.
Heartwarming, inspiring, and timeless, A Little Princess remains a treasured literary classic and coming-of-age story for readers of all ages. Its memorable characters and uplifting themes make it ideal for families, students, young readers, and fans of classic fiction with strong female protagonists.

Born in Cheetham, Manchester, England, on November 24, 1849, Frances Hodgson Burnett developed her love for reading at a very young age. With an active imagination, she wrote stories and enjoyed narrating them to her mother, cousins, and friends. In 1868, Burnett’s first story was published in Godey’s Lady’s Book. She had begun writing for a livelihood and wrote non-stop. That Lass o’ Lowrie’s, her first full-length novel, was published in 1877. She started writing children’s fiction after meeting Louisa May Alcott and Mary Mapes Dodge―the editor of St. Nicholas, a children’s magazine. In the winter of 1887, she published Sara Crewe or What Happened at Miss Minchin’s in the United States. A Little Princess, an expanded version of Sara Crewe or What Happened at Miss Minchin’s, was published in book form in September 1905. A huge success, it is still considered among children’s all-time favourite novels. Burnett published The Secret Garden in 1911. A classic of children’s literature, it became one of her most popular novels.
