Synopsis

Was the so-called Dark Ages truly dark? S. R. Maitland answers with wit, evidence, and a preacher's feel for human motives. History gets its colours back. In these medieval history essays he challenges dark ages myths and opens a vivid view of early Middle Ages Europe, from early medieval religion to the habits of medieval literature and learning. Read continuously, it is brisk and argumentative; dip in, and it becomes a dependable church history reference on how medieval church and culture shaped daily thought. His prose is plain-spoken, occasionally combative, and always alert to the way labels distort. Behind the argument lies a defence of continuity: schools, books, and belief did not vanish; they changed, sometimes brilliantly. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike. First published in the great nineteenth-century revival of medieval studies, Maitland's work helped reframe how the ninth to twelfth centuries are discussed in English, especially in Carolingian era history and the story of Western Christendom. It suits curious general readers who want clear arguments, and medieval studies students who need a concise guide to sources and assumptions. Keep it as an unabridged classic text on your shelves, or alongside an annotated classic edition of related chronicles: either way, it is a sharp reminder that the past is more complex than its nickname. A radical classic for history collectors.
