Most of Great Britain, made up by England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, was conquered by Rome, which ruled the island for almost 500 years. Subjected to raids by Continental Angles, Jutes and Saxons, in 1066 England was conquered by the Normans, who were eventually assimilated. While Wales came under Anglo-Norman control in 1282, it wasn't officially annexed by England until the 16th century. After the Wars of Scottish Independence, the House of Stuart ruled Scotland uncontested for three centuries. In 1707 England, Scotland and Wales formed the United Kingdom, which fueled by such developments as the England-led Industrial Revolution, the Scottish Enlightenment, and the building of the expansive British Empire. The Empire came under extreme pressure during World War 1, and was further weakened by World War 2, resulting in its dissolution, and the establishment of the British Commonwealth of Nations in its place. Collections of English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh literature are anthologies that have been compiled in order to demonstrate the works of a number of English, Irish, Scottish, and Welsh authors. History derives from Greek historia, meaning "inquiry, knowledge acquired by investigation". It is the study of the past as described in written documents, with events occurring before written records being considered prehistory. World history is generally considered a teaching topic rather than a research topic. There are many history text books of varying quality, with some addressing the teaching of history or historiography, the process of undertaking research in history. Leopold Classic Library has the goal of making available to readers the classic books that have been out of print for decades. While these books may have occasional imperfections, we consider that only hand checking of every page ensures readable content without poor picture quality, blurred or missing text etc. That's why You can search " Leopold Classic Library " in categories of your interest to find other books in our extensive collection. Hardcover. Condition: New. The work describes the people of northern India, from their habitat to their religious beliefs, from their social life and professions to their race type in a concise manner. The author clinically introduces his readers to the populace in northern India of the time. First published in London in 1907, Natives of Northern India is systematically laid out in sixteen chapters and the book carries thirty-two illustrations. After discussing the ethnicity of the Indian population, Crooke next talks about the tribes in the northern hills, then the tribes in the southern hills, and he includes their habitat and behaviour, environment, and singular customs and traditions and in which region of the country a particular tribe can be found. Castes such as the Rajputs, Jats and Brahmins; village industries; criminals and what he calls 'vagrant tribes' have also been discussed. Crooke focuses on home life and the role played by women; the typical life of a child and the games they play; social rites and customs that cover perhaps the three most important events in a person's life: birth, marriage and death. He devotes two chapters to popular religious beliefs including but not limited to animism, totemism, village gods, animal worship; and magic, shamanism and witchc raft. Lucidly written, Crooke gives a good picture of the social structure of the time. He has referred to other sources, thereby adding to the richness of this book. Seller Inventory # 143200
