Considerada la mejor novela argentina del siglo XX, Sobre héroes y tumbas, publicada en 1961, consagró a Ernesto Sabato como escritor universal. En sus páginas indagó las verdades últimas que hay en el subsuelo del hombre; tradujo sus obsesiones más autobiográficas a las reflexiones sobre la historia nacional y profundizó la investigación de la relación entre la conciencia y el mundo exterior al sujeto. La novela muestra a los últimos representantes de una familia oligárquica venida a menos, en la que se intercala la trágica historia de los seguidores del general Lavalle que una vez derrotados llevaron el cuerpo muerto de su jefe al exilio. Por un lado, Martín y Alejandra, que viven una relación tortuosa y atormentada, incapaces de escapar a un turbio destino: la predisposición genética de la familia de ella a la locura. Por otro, la historia de un incesto brutal y la asfixiante atmósfera en la que se debaten sus protagonistas. Pero esta novela narra mucho más: Sobre héroes y tumbas cuenta la invención de una trama siniestra protagonizada por una apócrifa organización de ciegos y, además, la necesaria decisión de huir a la Patagonia en busca de un renacimiento vital, de una nueva oportunidad.
